Come with us to explore Android Oreo Arrives to the Moto G 2013 Through Unofficial LineageOS 15
The Moto G line, first conceived by Motorola back in 2013 (during Google ownership), was always one of the most beloved phone lines among ROM developers in our forums. All 5 generations have outstanding developer support and a lot of ROMs and custom kernels to choose from. The first one of them, the Moto G 2013, launched in November 2013, went on to become the best selling phone in Motorola’s history, even surpassing the iconic Razr flip phone. The phone featured a Snapdragon 400 processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 4.5″ 720p screen, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (quickly updated to KitKat) and was available in 8 and 16 GB configurations, all for the absurdly low price of $200. While these specs are low range for all means nowadays, it hasn’t stopped the phone from having a thriving dev community, even today.
Today, the original Moto G got its first unofficial LineageOS 15 test ROM, based on Android 8.0 Oreo. This makes the Moto G 2013 join the select, but still growing, family of Android Oreo devices. The ROM was developed by XDA Senior Member Carlos Arriaga. It’s not daily driver material just yet though: camera, Bluetooth and sensors are not working, and SELinux is set on permissive. Still, everything else works, so this is a pretty solid first release. The developer has also provided unofficial ARM Gapps for Android Oreo.
This isn’t the only Moto device getting Oreo love, though. Some hours ago, XDA Recognized Developer Alberto97 released an unofficial LineageOS 15 ROM for the Moto G 2015. On this one, everything is working correctly except for the camera and VoLTE, so things are looking nice for development. Oreo has also booted on the Moto G4 and Moto G5 recently, so they should get test builds soon as well. If you’re willing to test out this alpha-quality ROM on your original Moto G, then go ahead to this thread and download everything you need! The Android Oreo bring up has been going along nicely, and we’ll keep you informed about everything.
