Come with us to explore Confirmed] Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus reportedly won’t be getting Android Oreo
There are a lot of people buying smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches that don’t care about updates at all. In fact, a lot of them are afraid of them due to one bad experience they had when they lost some of their data as it wasn’t backed up. However, Android updates are important (especially security updates) and many who spend hundreds of dollars on a device expect it to get at least one major version update. Lenovo launched the Tab 4 10 Plus back in February of last year at MWC and a new report claims it will not receive an update to Android Oreo.
If you remember, we covered the four different Lenovo Tab 4 Android tablets that the company launched at MWC 2017. This launch lineup included the Lenovo Tab 4 8, Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus, Lenovo Tab 4 10, and lastly, the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus. Prices of these four new tablets ranged between $110 to $250 depending on which version you wanted with the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus being the most expensive. The device wasn’t high-end or anything but did come with a 10-inch 1920×1200 pixel display, the Snapdragon 625 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 7,000mAh capacity battery.
All of these devices were launched with Android 7.0 Nougat right out of the box. It would be months before Google would release Android 8.0 Oreo but many were hoping that at least the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus would receive the update at some point. However, a new report from Deskmodder says this is not the case and the device will be retired with Nougat for its software. We even usually see Motorola roll out a major Android version update to its popular Moto G series but it’s possible that sales of these tablets were so low that they felt it wasn’t worth the resources.
Not only will the device not receive Oreo’s new features, but those who put an emphasis on security updates will also be left out in the cold. If the company isn’t going to keep the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus updated then it will surely become a major target for malware in the future.
Update: No Android Oreo for the Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus
Before publishing this article, we reached out to Lenovo PR to verify Deskmodder‘s report. A Lenovo spokesperson reached back to us with the following statement:
Updates vary by model, in which our tablets receive Android and security updates after launch. We announced the Tab 4 10 Plus in February 2017 and since then it has received seven OTA updates. However, on this particular model it has reached the end of its update cycle and we will not support further updates in the future.
We’re disappointed that a device that launched with Android 7.1 Nougat won’t even receive a single platform update to Android 8.0 Oreo. People generally keep their tablets around longer than their smartphones, so it’s sad to see that even some budget Android smartphones get more software support than this.
