Come with us to explore Nokia 8’s stable Android Pie update is now rolling out
The Nokia 8 has been a bittersweet smartphone for a lot of people. When HMD Global began licensing the Nokia brand it left many people skeptical about how it would turn out. Sure, a lot of the initial employees originally came from Nokia, but Android was something these employees weren’t familiar with. However, since then the company has amassed a nice following for their Nokia smartphones and many people have been happy about the deal. Those who currently own the Nokia 8 are even happier now as it has been confirmed the stable version of Android Pie is finally rolling out.

The Nokia 8 was announced in August of last year and it was the first high-end Android smartphone HMD Global released under the new licensing deal. It was finally released in Europe a month later, but us enthusiasts here at XDA were unable to unlock the bootloader. We were told by HMD Global that they would look into the possibility of allowing this and it took them an entire year before they finally had things in place to allow customers to do so. So while Nokia fans were happy they finally had a high-end smartphone to buy, some customers weren’t happy about how things were handled.

These same customers have been anxious to get their hands on Android Pie as well, and that finally happened early last week (but only as a beta). This left many people worried because companies generally beta test their software for weeks (or longer) before rolling out a stable version of the update. Interestingly enough though, HMD Global was further along with their beta update than many had expected. It seems as if they were doing a private beta for the update until the last week as we’re now being told by Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, Juho Sarvikas, that the official version is rolling out (in phases) to current Nokia 8 customers.
There are a few things to note about this update. While it does include the December security patches and some of the Android Pie features you would expect, things like Adaptive Battery and app actions are not included. It’s also worth mentioning that the Nokia 8 Sirocco remains to be left out in the cold. As evident by the mentions to the tweet above, a lot of users are unhappy about HMD Global’s treatment of the Sirocco.
